Trenching & Excavation Competent Person

Trenching & Excavation “Competent Person” Training
(8 – hour Training)
This course is intended for personnel who are required to perform work in and around Excavation and Trench work. This Trenching and Excavation “Competent Person” level for trenching and excavation. Since the “Competent Person” is required to make critical decisions, they must receive this much more in-depth training to create a safe environment for workers, as outlined in the OSHAs standards.
This course will help the workers to answer important job site questions such as: Are there adequate means of access and egress? Are adjacent structures stabilized? Does the procedure require benching or multiple benching, shoring, or shielding? Are means of egress from the cut, cavity, or depression no more than 25 feet from the work?
- Water removal equipment and operations.
- Inspecting excavations subject to runoff from heavy rains to determine need for suitable protection.
- Cave-in potential and need for protective systems.
- Damaged material or equipment used for protective systems.
- Classifying soil, by both visual analysis and by testing, to determine appropriate protection.
- Appropriate slope of an excavation to prevent collapse due to surcharge loads, operating equipment, adjacent structures, or traffic.
- Structural ramps that are used solely by employees as a means of access or egress.
- The hazardous area where evidence of possible cave-in, failure of protective systems, hazardous atmospheres, or other hazardous conditions exists.

- Protective Systems – Requirements, Options, Installation, and Inspection
- Sloping and Benching – Requirements

- Rescue Considerations
Time: Sessions & Examination are from, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 1 hour for lunch
